Luiz Adriano matched Lionel Messi’s record haul of five in a single UEFA Champions League game as the Pitmen struck gold in Belarus.Bate Borisov Vs Shakhtar Donetsk highlights.
The 27-year-old completed a hat-trick inside 13 minutes and added a fourth for good measure just before the break, with goals from fellow Brazilians Alex Teixeira and Douglas Costa sending Shakhtar in at the break with an 6-0 lead – a UEFA Champions League first. Luiz Adriano’s second moved him level with Andriy Vorobey’s record of 114 goals in all competitions for the Pitmen; his fifth, in the second half, meant Luiz Adriano ended the night on 117.
Taison set up Alex Teixeira to round Sergei Chernik and open the scoring on 11 minutes, but it took a heroic saving block from Darijo Srna to deny Maksim Volodko an equaliser, the Croatian clattering into his own goalpost in the process. However, the focus switched to the other end as Chernik flattened Alex Teixeira in the box, Luiz Adriano putting the resulting penalty into the bottom corner.
Taison played in Douglas Costa to make it 3-0 on 35 minutes, and within seconds BATE were four behind, Luiz Adriano clipping into the net at the near post from Vyacheslav Shevchuk’s assist from the left. His hat-trick was completed on 40 minutes as the luckless Nemanja Tubić inadvertently delivered the ball to him inside the penalty area, and his fourth was the easiest of the lot, as he bundled another killer Shevchuk delivery into the net.
BATE tightened up at half-time, fearful perhaps of matching some unwanted records – the heaviest home defeat in UEFA Champions League history (MŠK Žilina 0-7 Olympique de Marseille) and indeed the competition’s all-time heaviest loss (still, Liverpool FC 8-0 Beşiktaş JK).
Luiz Adriano wheeled away in despair after coming agonisingly close to a fifth, heading against the post on 66 minutes. He might have feared that he was fated not to join Lionel Messi as one of only two players to have scored five in a UEFA Champions League game after he converted an 81st minute penalty only to have it chalked off for encroachment.
However, he regained his composure and finished into the same corner from the re-spot.
And that’s the whistle to put the hosts out of their misery. It finishes BATE 0-7 Shakhtar on the night.
82′Penalty Goal Luiz Adriano
72′A string of passes from Shakhtar around the fringes of the BATE box results in a shot on goal that is blocked. Shakhtar continue to work an opening but the hosts are far more organised in defence and cannot be broken down. Better, defensively, from Yermakovich’s side.
44′Goal Luiz Adriano
GOAAAAL! And that’s another! Adriano has his fourth and Shakhtar have, you guessed it, their sixth. Teixeira is played the ball on the left-wing after a splendid cross-field pass and he slips in Shevchuk on the overlap. He fires in the ball, low across the goal, and it bobbles through three or four blue shirts and to the feet of Adriano who knocks it in.
40′Goal Luiz Adriano
GOAAAL! The goals just do not stop coming! It’s five now for Shakhtar and another for Adriano. It’s from the left again where the goal is created. An initial delivery is blocked but falls straight to a white Shakhtar shirt. It’s pumped back in the box and Adriano picks it up to swivel and fire home. That’s a first-half hat-trick for him!
37′Assist Vyacheslav Shevchuk
37′Goal Luiz Adriano
GOAAAAL! Within moments of scoring, Shakhtar have scored another as Adriano has added a fourth for his side! It’s almost identical to the third as the ball is played in from the left by Shevchuk. Adriano slips in front of his marker at the near post and flicks it in from yards out. This is getting embarrassing for the hosts.
35′Goal Douglas Costa
GOAAAL! 3-0! Shakhtar have hit BATE on the counter attack again! The hosts are wide open in midfield and their defence has been pulled too far apart. Adriano breaks on the left and he knocks the ball across goal for Costa to simply tap in from yards out.
32′PENALTY? There could have been a strong shout for a second penalty and, if given, it would have certainly ended this game as a content. Adriano flicked on a long ball forwards towards Teixeira and he latched onto the ball. Chernik rushed out and appeared to collide with him, causing the Shakhtar player to tumble, but no penalty has been given.
30′CHANCE! Fantastic effort from Costa! He cuts inside from the right and fires a left-footed shot on goal that curls and dips. But Chernik is equal to it and tips it over for a corner.
28′Penalty Goal Luiz Adriano
GOAAL! Adriano scores from the spot despite Chernik’s best efforts to keep it out. He went the right direction, but couldn’t get a hand to it.
