An impressive performance by Tim Howard helped Everton mark their return to Europa League action with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Wolfsburg.
A mix-up between Ricardo Rodriguez and goalkeeper and Diego Benaglio gave the hosts the lead after just 15 minutes before Seamus Coleman doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time.
Leighton Baines added a third two minutes after the break after Aidan McGeady was felled inside the penalty area under a sliding challenge from Robin Knoche.
And there was still time for more goalmouth action as Kevin Mirallas added a fourth before Rodriguez netted a consolation in injury time.
Wolfsburg will no doubt point to the controversial penalty right at the start of the second half which pretty much ended the match as a contest as the crucial moment in the game. Everton always seemed to have a measure of control this evening and you feel that they could’ve gone up a gear if they had needed to.
Everton have sent out a pretty strong message to the other teams in this competition this evening. They have despatched Wolfsburg by four goals to nil and if they can continue to produce performances of that quality then the Blues could go far in this tournament.
Tim Howard will be bitterly disappointed not to have held onto his clean sheet but there was nothing that he could do about Rodriguez’s fabulous freekick. Wolfsburg certainly deserved a goal for their efforts in the second half.
