West Ham United lose out to Spanish side Malaga CF at the Schalke 04 Cup in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.Malaga vs West Ham highlights.
Final score: West Ham United 0-2 Malaga CF
91: That’s the final whistle. Malaga are deserved winners and they lift the Schalke 04 Cup. For West Ham, there was not a huge amount to get excited about in terms of goals or chances. Jarvis had a golden opportunity late on, but was denied by Kameni. We will complete our pre-season schedule at home to UC Sampdoria in the Marathonbet Cup next Saturday afternoon.
89: A poor clearance means West Ham just cannot get out of their own third of the pitch. Malaga again pass their way through the West Ham defence. Potts’ clearance falls to another yellow shirt. Juanmi’s shot is cleared off the line by Nasha and Santa Cruz converts, but he is offside.
88: Malaga cut West Ham open and the ball eventually falls to Horta. He shoots low and inches wide of the far post.
86: A long-range effort is tipped over by Adrian for another corner. There is a bit of pinball in the penalty area before West Ham clear. Jarvis beats Boka on halfway and he is clear and through on goal. Only Kameni to beat, but Jarvis’ touch lets him down and the big Cameroon stopper is out and saves on the edge of his box. A golden chance goes begging. Even the Schalke 04 fans were egging Jarvis on to score.
85: West Ham break out from the Malaga set piece and Noble sends Jarvis away down the left. He is quick and beats his man on the outside before crossing. Boka makes a bit of a mess of the chest back to Kameni and Vaz Te nips in, but he is off-balance and the effort is caught by the goalkeeper.
83: Duda is in again, this time following a horrible defensive mix-up. The 34-year-old controls and has all the time in the world to beat Adrian, only to slam his shot high into the side netting at the near post.
81: Duda is fouled about 30 yards out in a central position. The No17 himself takes the free-kick and Adrian is forced into a plunging save low to his left. The ball bounces loose, but the follow-up header is safely into the hands of the goalkeeper.
79: Wow. Adrian spills a shot and Santa Cruz – who has just replaced Rescardini – misses an absolute sitter. He was no farther than five yards out, but somehow dragged the shot wide. Duda is also on.
78: Reece Burke can be proud of his performance against a Malaga team who have had a lot of the ball and put a lot of pressure on the West Ham back four. Potts replaces Reid. For Malaga, there are two more changes but I’m afraid I could not see their numbers from up here. Apologies.
75: Still 15 minutes to go but this match seems to be meandering towards an inevitable conclusion. Malaga look comfortable. The travelling West Ham fans would love to have a goal to cheer, I’m sure.
71: Malaga make a couple of changes. Recio is replaced by Juanpi and Ignacio Camacho is on for Pablo Perez. Juanpi is a 20-year-old who was born in Venezuela and spent last season with lower division Atletico Malagueno.
66: The Schalke 04 fans on the terrace to my left are singing ‘West Ham, West Ham’ so we know where their loyalties lie. Unfortunately, they haven’t had a huge amount to cheer so far.
65: Horta comes on for Samuel on the right wing. The new man is a Portugal U20 international signed from Vitoria Guimaraes this summer.
64: Noble catches Recio late. He’s been booked, remember, but the referee awards a free-kick and nothing more.
62: Noble picks out the run of Vaz Te, whose first-time volley is saved by Kameni. Applause from all corners of the stadium, but unfortunately Vaz Te was offside.
61: Jenkinson is down and needs the physio on. He’ll be replaced. Amos Nasha replaces the on-loan Arsenal right-back.
59: So close to a goal for the Hammers! Vaz Te is fouled by Boka. Jenkinson lofts the free-kick into the box and Kameni stays at home. Reid is unmarked and his touch bounces a yard wide of the far post.
57: Another corner for Malaga as a long-range shot from Perez takes a deflection and lands on the top of the net. Before the corner is taken, Reid and Sanchez get into some handbags and are spoken to by referee Mr Aarnink.
55: Adrian makes a smart reaction save to push Rescardini’s snap-shot over the bar for a corner. The chance came after Reid and Luis Alberto tussled in the box. The corner is taken short to Boka, who has lost Vaz Te. The Ivorian crosses and Rescardini wins the header. It’s looping towards the top corner and Adrian tips over again.
53: Luis Alberto has the ball in the net again, but thankfully he’s flagged offside before slamming the ball past Adrian.
52: For those of you not aware of who Cullen is, he is an 18-year-old central midfield player of the box-to-box variety. The teenager made eight Development Squad appearances last term and was also capped twice by Republic of Ireland at U18 level.
51: Cresswell intercepts and flies forward down the left. Vaz Te has plenty of space inside the penalty area if the left-back can pick him out, but his low cross is cut out.
49: Vaz Te crosses from the left but there is not a single West Ham player in the box. A slightly loose touch from Angeleri teases Zarate, who is penalised for a push on the defender.
48: A few thousand more Schalke 04 fans have arrived in the stadium and they are making themselves heard away to my left.
46: Malaga get the second half underway/. West Ham have replaced Diame with Josh Cullen. The young midfielder is involved straight away as Jarvis digs out a cross from the byline. Cullen and Vaz Te challenge Kameni, but the goalkeeper deals with it.
Half-time: West Ham United 0-2 Malaga CF
46: That’s the end of the first half. West Ham have it all to do if they are going to win the Schalke 04 Cup. Two well-taken goals have put Malaga in control. For West Ham, chances have been very few and far between, with Adrian’s penalty save being the highlight.
43: Half-time is rapidly approaching. Remember, we won’t play any added time. Jarvis swings over a right-footed cross and Vaz Te leaps, but the ball curls over his head and out for a goal kick.
38: West Ham win a free-kick inside the Malaga half. It’s lofted into the box for Vaz Te and Diame to challenge, but Kameni comes out strongly and takes man, ball and anything else in his way. Diame feels the full force of the challenge and needs the physio on. Kameni taps him on the head as he walks off following treatment.
37: Malaga have another set piece. This one is 35 yards out. The ball finds Samuel in acres of space on the right side of the penalty area, but thankfully he is flagged offside. Perhaps that’s why he had so much space. Malaga are so fluent in open play. They pass and move nicely. Very smooth stuff from the Spanish side.
34: West Ham haven’t seen much of the ball and the frustration is growing. Noble goes in hard on Recio and is booked. No complaints from the West Ham captain.
31: Malaga are rampant. Rescardini shoots from 25 yards and Adrian cannot hold on. He is up and saves the follow-up effort from Luis Alberto.
30: ADRIAN SAVES THE PENALTY! Luis Alberto’s strike isn’t great, to be honest, and the goalkeeper saves with his legs. Huge celebrations from the West Ham fans behind the goal.
29: Now Malaga have a penalty. It’s Jenkinson who is penalised for a foul on Luis Alberto. Reid and Noble don’t like the award and berate the referee. The man who won the penalty will take it…
27: Jarvis beats his man again and crosses low for Zarate. His touch takes him away from goal and he shoots from a difficult angle. The ball strikes the hand of a defender, but it wasn’t deliberate and referee Arne Aarnink waves the No10′s appeals away.
26: It could be 3-0 as Juanmi gets in behind and shoots, but Reid makes a block and Adrian collects. Malaga looked good against Newcastle yesterday and they’ve clicked into gear again this afternoon.
24: Goal! Malaga go 2-0 up and it’s too easy. It’s Luis Alberto who scores. Rosales threads a good ball through for Juanmi, whose run hasn’t been tracked. He finds Luis Alberto at the far post, who takes a touch away from goal, but still has time to plant his shot past Adrian to the goalkeeper’s right.
22: Goal! The Spaniards lead in slightly fortuitous fashion. Rescaldini benefits when his the ball falls to him from Cresswell’s clearance. With the defender on the turf, the Argentine has time and space to plant a side-foot shot past Adrian. Boka had caused the initial problem with a run from deep and it was his wayward through ball that Cresswell didn’t deal with.
21: Diame wins a free-kick. It’s taken quickly to Jarvis and he beats Rosales again down the outside before clipping over a superb cross to the far post. Kameni flaps and misses the ball, but there is nobody there in a West Ham shirt to benefit.
18: A few thousand Schalke fans have come in to see the game, which is nice of them. Boka drops a shoulder and beats Vaz Te on the outside. He crosses and Reid heads away. West Ham again looking solid defensively.
16: Burke does superbly well to toe-end the ball away from Luis Alberto after the left winger had cut in and controlled a through ball on his chest. The No23 looked to be through on Adrian’s goal, but the tall centre-back got back in and poked the ball through to Adrian. The on-loan Liverpool man must have thought he was going to score then.
14: Just as it was yesterday, this is a competitive game. It might be pre-season, but these players want to get themselves up to speed before the real stuff starts. Noble wins a sliding challenge and Reid doesn’t hold back to win a 50/50. Next up, Diame leaves his man in a heap inside the centre circle.
12: West Ham coming into things a little more here. Jarvis beats Rosales on the outside and cuts back for Diame to slide in. However, the left-back Boka is there and makes a sound block.
8: A first real chance for Malaga and it’s Rescaldini who heads Rosales’ near-post cross powerfully but well wide of the upright. Adrian had it covered, anyhow. Rosales had played a neat one-two with Samuel to get clear down the right. He is a big lump is Rescaldini. The former Velez Sarsfield man is 6’3 and he played up front with Mauro Zarate during the opening part of last season!
6: Sorry for the lack of updates but very little has happened so far. Malaga have a free-kick 35 yards out but it floats across the face of the box and out for a throw on the far side to the Hammers.
2: Both teams feeling the other out in the early stages. Malaga are helpfully wearing yellow shirts with white numbers on – meaning they are nigh-on impossible to read from up here in the Press Box.
