Newcastle United ended their Schalke 04 Cup campaign on a high with a commanding 3-1 victory over hosts Schalke on Sunday.

Goals from summer signings Emmanuel Riviere and Remy Cabella were sandwiched either side of a Rolando Aarons effort as the Magpies put Saturday’s disappointment against Malaga firmly behind them.
Riviere headed United in front on 18 minutes after excellent work from rookie winger Aarons in the build-up.

Aarons then turned goalscorer early in the second half when his shanked cross sailed over the head of home goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann, and Cabella put the result beyond any doubt with a cool one-on-one finish.
Schalke substitute Donis Avdijaj netted a consolation with the final kick of the match, but the result was no less than Newcastle deserved for a dominant performance in which they were resolute in defence and dangerous on the break against the German giants.
After an encouraging start in which they forced a handful of early corners, United broke the deadlock on 18 minutes, and it owed much to the skill and persistence of teenage winger Aarons.
The Academy product picked up the ball inside his half and drove down the left flank, riding a handful of challenges before delivering a cross into the penalty area.
There was still plenty for Riviere to do, but the former Monaco man made it look easy, rising above his marker to glance a superb header into the far corner.
That failed to spark Schalke into life, however, and returning Magpies goalkeeper Tim Krul was rarely called upon as the hosts failed to mount a serious response before half-time.
The closest they came was centre-back Joel Matip flicking a header from a corner goalwards, only to see Vurnon Anita hack clear from inside the six-yard box.
Right-back Kaan Ayhan curled a 25-yard free-kick harmlessly over the top in the 38th minute, following Yoan Gouffran’s foul on Marcel Sobottka, but Schalke were unable to force Krul into any meaningful stops before the break.
Alan Pardew made four changes at half-time, introducing Rob Elliot, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Lubo Satka and Mehdi Abeid, and within five minutes the latter saw a shot blocked right on the edge of the area, as he looked to make an instant impression.
But it was Aarons who was really catching the eye, and the wide man doubled United’s advantage in the 54th minute.
It came from another run down the left touchline, although had more than a hint of good fortune about it, as his subsequent cross was mishit and sailed over the head of caught-out Schalke stopper Ralf Fahrmann and into the back of the net.
New signing Facundo Ferreyra was introduced three minutes later, just hours after completing his loan switch from Shakhtar Donetsk, and created the Magpies’ third goal of the evening on 72 minutes.
When the ball was played into his feet some way out with his back to goal, Ferreyra flicked into the path of fellow summer arrival Remy Cabella, who raced clear and confidently slotted home.
Donis Avdijaj replied for Schalke in the final seconds of the contest but it was no more than a consolation, as United ran out convincing winners.
